In 2025, Singapore and India mark a significant milestone: 60 years of diplomatic relations, established shortly after Singapore's independence on August 24, 1965. This enduring partnership is built upon shared history, mutual respect, and a commitment to regional and global collaboration.

  • Early Connections: The ties between India and Singapore date back centuries, with cultural and commercial exchanges flourishing long before modern diplomatic relations. Singapore's name itself, derived from the Sanskrit "Singapura" (Lion City), reflects these deep-rooted connections.





  • Colonial Era: During British colonial rule, Singapore was administered as part of British India from 1826 to 1867, fostering administrative and infrastructural linkages that have influenced contemporary relations. 

🤝 Diplomatic Milestones

  • Strategic Partnership: In 2015, the bilateral relationship was elevated to a Strategic Partnership, enhancing cooperation across various sectors including defense, trade, and technology.

  • Ministerial Roundtable: The establishment of the India-Singapore Ministerial Roundtable (ISMR) in 2022 has provided a platform for high-level discussions on emerging areas such as sustainability, digitalization, and advanced manufacturing. 



💼 Economic and Trade Relations

  • Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement (CECA): Signed in 2005, CECA has been instrumental in boosting bilateral trade and investment, eliminating tariff barriers, and facilitating mutual recognition of professional qualifications. 

  • Trade and Investment: Singapore is among India's top trading partners and a significant source of foreign direct investment, particularly in sectors like infrastructure, technology, and finance. 



🛡️ Defense and Security Cooperation

  • Joint Military Exercises: The annual Singapore-India Maritime Bilateral Exercise (SIMBEX), initiated in 1994, exemplifies the strong defense ties, focusing on maritime security and interoperability. 



  • Defense Agreements: The 2003 Defense Cooperation Agreement and subsequent agreements have facilitated joint training, technology development, and strategic dialogues. 

🎉 60th Anniversary Celebrations

  • Commemorative Logo: On January 16, 2025, Presidents Droupadi Murmu and Tharman Shanmugaratnam unveiled a special logo symbolizing the 60-year partnership, incorporating elements from both national flags and flowers—the Lotus and Orchid.



  • Cultural Events: A series of events, including the "Namaste Bharat" exhibition and an Indian film festival, are being organized to celebrate the rich cultural ties and people-to-people connections.
